Holidays and time with family are filled with traditions. From enjoying specific foods, hosting and/or participating in various events, and much more bring the holidays to life.
The holidays are not complete in my family, if we don’t have specific desserts, the assembly of a puzzle or two, having cinnamon rolls and egg nog while reading the Christmas story on Christmas morning. It is a time when we have special foods from the Scandinavian culture within the Midwest region where we grew up.
Some families open gifts on Christmas Eve, whereas some open them only on Christmas morning.
Each culture has its own traditions, and each family has their own traditions within each culture.
Children in the Netherlands prepare for Sinterklaas’ arrival by preparing traditional clogs filled with food for Sinterklaas’ white horse hoping the food will be exchanged with small gifts.
In Greece, boats are decorated with lights to commemorate the arrival of St. Nicholas as he is the patron saint of sailors.
In Czech Republic it is Baby Jesus, not Santa Clause, who gives gifts to children.
And in Mexico, and throughout Central and South America, midnight mass is conducted on Christmas Eve in Catholic parishes to bring in Christmas Day.
What are traditions specific to your family during the holidays? Are these specific to your family or do they hold broader cultural roots?
