It is easy to think that holidays within our culture are unique only to us because of their history and the stories we’ve grown up knowing.

Thanksgiving is an example of one such holiday. However, there are many cultures that celebrate Thanksgiving, or at least a similar holiday/celebration where the focus is on giving thanks and being thankful.

CULTURS magazine shares a few countries that celebrate a Thanksgiving holiday within their specific culture. Here is a brief highlight of each:

  • Canada celebrates on the second Monday of October with Le Jour de l’Action de Grâce (commonly known as “Canadian Thanksgiving”)

  • South Korea celebrates the harvest festival of Chuseok in September

  • In October, Vietnam celebrates Tết Trung Thu (also known as Mid-Summer Festival or “The Children’s Festival” as it centers around their childr

  • Thanksgiving within the United States is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and is reminiscent of the story of early European pilgrims sharing a meal with their Native American neighbors

  • Though not celebrated country-wide, Erntedankfest (typically a religious holiday) is celebrated in Germany in either September or October (depending on the region of the country)

  • Asogli Te Za is celebrated during September in Ghana to give thanks for the harvest

  • Japan celebrates Labor Thanksgiving Day on November 23, and is based on an ancient harvest festival that has expanded to celebrate the hard work of its people
