November - National Native American Heritage Month.
All history within the Western/Northern Hemisphere has, at some level, its roots woven within Native American history as there were hundreds of Native tribes before Europeans made their settlements here.
We learn some of this past in our school history classes, but there are many things we don’t ever learn or even think about when it comes to Native American past and present.
For instance, while using the term ‘tribe’ is fairly common today, it holds a deeper and more historical meaning. This term was used instead of ‘nation’ because the early American leaders didn’t want Native Americans to find dignity and power within the term ‘nation.’
Seemingly small things to those of us who are not of Native backgrounds can hold significant weight to those who are. As with any people and culture, it is important to be familiar with the history of the Native peoples in order to better know how to connect and relate with them in our present.
A great way to start is to use credible sources of information such as: Indian Country Today (https://www.facebook.com/IndianCountryToday) & Native Sun News Today (https://www.facebook.com/nsweekly/).
