Hanukkah is the Jewish Festival of Lights which commemorates when the temple’s lamp, which only had enough oil for one day, miraculously stayed lit for eight days after the temple in Jerusalem was reclaimed from the Seleucid Empire In 164 BC.
Celebrating this miraculous event, the nine branched candlestick, known as the menorah, is lit - one candle lights each of the other eight candles, one each night until all nine are lit the last day.
Each night, as part of the celebration, there are blessings, songs, food, sometimes gifts, and even the spinning of the iconic dreidel.
